When looking back on the past 8 weeks I have to take into consideration a quote which is often repeated to me by my mum; Henry Ford once said that “ whether you think that you can do something or you cant do something, you will always be right.” The rotations have taught me that although I may not want to sometimes, there is nothing I cant do if I just let go of the control and let my instincts guide me. This has been a very difficult thing to learn and I feel is extremely evident within my work throughout the past few weeks.
I started with Fine Art and found it extremely difficult. I didn’t know what was expected of me and coming straight from an extremely controlled and structured A-Level course was scared to go out of what I knew and experiment. I feel that in this area my experimentation: especially within my drawing work was extremely limited. I didn’t think that I expressed to my full ability the nature of the project, as I was constantly conflicted within myself as to what exactly was the nature of the brief.
The crit at the end of this area along with the others was extremely useful and taught me a variety of different ways of looking at my art and ways of expanding on my ideas. This for me was an extremely new experience but one I now feel is vital when doing work along with editing my work rather than just displaying it all.
Vis Com to me seemed a much better fit. From the beginning I found it easier to understand and develop from the briefs. In this area I feel that my work succeeded a lot more. In some areas such as my foot project the overall outcome for the days work was extremely successful. For me Vis Com was intellectually stimulating by allowing me to express the creativity at the same time as looking to how it would be received by an audience in the outside world which is a side to my art that I had never really considered outside of the range of size and scale before.
Unfortunately I was only in 3D and Spatial Design for just over a week but would have loved to have spent more time here. The small 3D model making I found extremely useful to being able to adapt design though physical manipulation of the model rather than mentally adapting it. This produced many extremely adapted and far more interesting shapes and structures. The 3D modal making from the 2D original drawings worked really well but if I had more time I wish that I could have expanded the ideas further by drawing from the 3D models and reinventing them back from the drawing into more 3D pieces.
Fashion Textiles for me was a vast turning point within the rotation. It meant that the rotations were nearly over and I had to choose the area that I wished to pursue, but also now that I had been through the other 3 rotations I had gained experience in both what was expected of me but also a new variety of techniques and processes as well as a willingness to experiment. I felt that my work throughout the 2 weeks was successful and that I worked well in a similar way to the way I had done in Vis Com. I loved experimenting with image manipulation here and the idea of freeing up my drawing more through the different drawing and mark making techniques.
For me the decision of which area to choose has been a difficult one. The two areas, which I really liked, were Vis Com and Fashion Textiles and choosing between the two has been difficult. I really enjoyed Vis Com as it was an area that I had had no real experience in before. The workload was difficult in Vis Com but I found all of it enjoyable. The same applied for Fashion Textiles; however, I had originally come to the course with the idea of pursuing a career in the fashion textile industry, possibly looking at a costume design course for my BA. For me I feel that vis com is very intellectual in the way messages are put across, I prefer the 3D element of the fashion course and like the more design nature that it incorporates. This is why at the end of the rotation period I am going to choose to go to the fashion textiles area.
